Getting hereTransportation

By bus

Take a Nishitetsu bus bound for Moji from the Kokura Station entrance stop and get off at Akasaka (赤坂). The temple is about a 3-minute walk from there.

Fares are paid on exit. IC cards such as Suica, ICOCA and nimoca are accepted.

By train and taxi

From JR Kokura Station, a taxi takes about 10 minutes. Kokura is a shinkansen stop, roughly 15 minutes from Hakata and 2 hours from Shin-Osaka, which makes the temple an easy half-day trip from either city.

By car

About 5 minutes from Tomino IC on the Kitakyushu Urban Expressway, or 10 minutes from Adachi IC. From central Kokura, follow National Route 3.

P Parking (4 spaces)

Free parking for visitors. It fills up on ceremony days, so allow extra time in March, May, August, September and November.

Admission
Free. There is no entrance charge and no ticket to buy.
Hours
The grounds have no fixed opening or closing time, and the temple office is open 9:00–17:00. Please keep your visit to daylight hours: the temple buildings are also the priest's family home, and the quiet after dark belongs to the people who live here.
At the gate
A short bow before passing through is the usual courtesy. Walking to one side of the centre of the path is traditional; nobody will mind if you forget.
At the hall
Put your hands together, bow, and keep it brief if others are waiting. There is no clapping at a Buddhist temple — that belongs at Shinto shrines.
Photography
Fine in the grounds. Ask first before photographing inside the hall, at the altar, or anyone attending a service.
Services
Funerals and memorial services are held here regularly. If one is underway, keep your distance and your voice down; you are welcome to stay and look around.
Cash
Goshuin seals and experience fees are cash only. There is no card payment at the temple office.

Groups, and visits outside office hours, are much easier if you let the temple know in advance. Write to us in English — that is completely fine. Our reply may come back in Japanese, and may take a day or two.
